23/03/24 – Hemsworth RUFC

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill for the final home fixture in this season’s league programme for our Men’s First XV.

An especially warm welcome to our opponents today from Moxon Fields, Hemsworth RUFC

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast-flowing rugby.

When we visited them in January, we came out on top 27 – 29 in a match that we should have won more convincingly. Again, lapses in concentration allowed our opponents to stay in touch with us for far too much of the game. A common theme for the season but perhaps not surprising given that we have fielded a relatively inexperienced team on many occasions. Hopefully, the experience gained this season will stand us in good stead next term when we will aim to trouble the promotion contenders more seriously.

Praise must be made today for our coaching team led by James Tindall. The author doubts whether their commitment to the cause and dedication to providing interesting, inspirational and well thought out sessions has an equal at our level and possibly grades above our own. Also, mention must be made of the time and commitment of the ground staff who spend hours and hours if not days each week to ensure we have the finest possible playing surface and changing facilities

No fixture this weekend for our senior Men’s Second XV, The Mighty Ducks. Their final fixture is at home v Ossett on April 6th. Instead, some of them turned out last night for our Nomads XV in a 3 way round robin at York with them and Southwell. York will have no doubt put out a strong team, Southwell is an unknown to us. The Ducks are to be commended this season for fulfilling their fixtures; pretty successfully! lending players to the opposition where necessary to ensure more people get a game and providing a backup to the First XV when required

Keep your fingers crossed for a dry and sunny afternoon. Regular patrons will know it’s seldom warm out on the field at Laund Hill Stadium but that there is always a warm rugby welcome in the bar for players, spectators, match officials, past players and anyone else who wants to enjoy a drink and discuss the sport of rugby union.

Great strides have been taken over the last 2 years towards securing a bright future for Huddersfield Laund Hill with the mini section being invigorated by a team of determined and committed volunteers who have worked tirelessly to recruit a huge number of new members who will grow with the club and have their own set of memories to treasure in the coming years both on and off the field.

Good luck to everyone taking to the field this weekend in Laund Hill colours.

We look forward to seeing our senior Roses XV in action again on Sunday at Aldwinians. 3pm kick-off. I’m sure they will be glad of your support if you can make it and, as is the norm this season, there is a busy schedule of mini and junior fixtures in the morning. Such has been the success of recruitment for this section, their fixtures are being staggered to allow the complex to cope with the logistics.

U6 training at home (currently)

U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12 Girls (Junior Roses) away at Pontefract

The Under 6 – Under 11 ages are mixed teams

Why not get yourself down to the Laund Hill on Sunday morning to blow the cobwebs away, enjoy fresh food and beverages from Kitson’s Table and watch the future of your club develop whilst giving the youngsters your support. They all play with smiles on their faces and have a great time while learning valuable lessons for life from our sport’s core values

Talking of DISCIPLINE…..

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field
