16/09/23 – Yarnbury

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill for the second home fixture of the Men’s senior First XV league season 2023-24

Our first venture into Yorkshire 2 for some years and a division that has, in the past, seen us launch several successful campaigns into league and knockout rugby. Everyone at the club, from the Monster Minis upwards, is geared up towards an enjoyable season.

An especially warm welcome today to our visitors from Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth near Leeds, Yarnbury Rugby Football Club

One of the oldest clubs in Yorkshire, Yarnbury’s history dates back to 1872, when the members of Headingley Hill Congregational Church first took the field. It was not, however, until 1896 when a joint camping trip to Upper Wharfedale with the Leeds Rifles Brigade that the Club was renamed Leeds Yarnbury. Yarnbury was the name of the Hamlet just outside of Grassington where the players were entertained after a game against the local side. In the early days Yarnbury had a slightly nomadic life moving from ground to ground in the North Leeds area but finally settled in Horsforth in 1926.

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast flowing rugby. Yarnbury finished mid table last season having won 11 drawn one and lost 10 of their fixtures in Yorkshire 2 and will be keen to test themselves today against a side who were in Yorkshire 1 last term so we will need to perform to the best of our ability to secure the win.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a dry and sunny afternoon. Regular patrons will know it’s seldom warm out on the field at Laund Hill Stadium but that there is always a warm rugby welcome in the bar for players, spectators, match officials, past players and anyone else who wants to enjoy a drink and discuss the sport of rugby union.

Great strides have been taken over the last 2 years towards securing a bright future for Huddersfield Laund Hill with the mini section being invigorated by a team of determined and committed volunteers who have worked tirelessly to recruit a huge number of new members who will grow with the club and have their own set of memories to treasure in the coming years both on and off the field.

Good luck to everyone taking to the field this weekend in Laund Hill colours, especially the men’s senior second XV and the senior Roses XV and minis tomorrow. We especially look forward to seeing our senior Roses XV in action and to seeing them make further progress this season. They have a great attitude to their rugby and numbers are on the increase at their well structured training sessions. Tomorrow they entertain Old Crossleyans women kicking off at 2.00 pm so please come along and give them your support

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field
