25/03/23 – Leodiensians

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill for what will be, weather permitting, the last league fixture of the season. Always assuming today’s match goes ahead, we are then entered into the North Shield where we have received a bye in the first round. Watch your favourite social media platform for updates on the second round draw . . .

Also at home today are our Second XV, The Mighty Ducks, who also entertain Leodiensians. Take a stroll up to the top field to lend them your support during the afternoon.

R.I.P David Roebuck and Les McCallion

This week, the club has been deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of both Les McCallion; who made many friends during his time at the club, and David Roebuck, a stalwart of Huddersfield YMCA and Laund Hill RUFC. An indefatigable supporter of the club, spirited groundsman, and founding father of Concert On The Hill. He will be mourned by the multitude who had the privilege to call him a friend.

Our thoughts are with their families and friends

2.50 pm for a 3.00 pm Kick Off

Our thoughts are with their families at this sad time and, spare a thought also for Steve Metcalfe R.I.P. who has once again, been joined by his old sparring partner where they can continue their discussions on the best way to prepare and preserve a field for rugby. I’m sure Steve had the kettle on ready…

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a dry and sunny afternoon as our first season as Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC draws to a close, the start of a new era for our club. Regular patrons will know it’s seldom warm out on the field at Laund Hill Stadium but that there is always a warm rugby welcome in the bar for players, spectators, match officials, past players and anyone else who wants to enjoy a drink  and discuss the sport of rugby union.

An especially warm welcome today to our visitors Crag Lane, Alwoodley in Leeds; Leodiensians RUFC .

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast flowing rugby. Leos currently sit ninth in our division, two points ahead of us after winning eight and losing thirteen of their fixtures and having earned seven bonus points. HLH lie tenth having won six, drawn one and lost fourteen of our fixtures with eleven added bonus points.

A home win today would see HLH and Leos exchange places, irrespective of bonus points.

Back in September, HLH narrowly lost to Leos at Crag Lane by 30 points to 36. I’m sure our visitors will want to end their season with a win so we must perform to our full capability today and hope to build on the positive momentum we began with a tremendous fight back to earn a draw away at Keighley and a home victory to do the double over Dinnington last time out.

Good luck to both teams and to Leos in the forthcoming cup competition. I’m sure everyone looks forward to a keenly contested tussle today at Laund Hill played within the laws and spirit of the game we all love. We were made very welcome at Crag Lane earlier this season and will look to be good hosts to our visitors, perhaps not being so generous to them on the field.

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field
