18/03/23 – Dinnington

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill for what would have been the last league fixture of the season. Always assuming today’s match goes ahead, we are fortunate to have just the one remaining league fixture to fulfil. At home next Saturday against Leodiensians.

Following that, the club will once again see cup action with the first of the draws being made this coming Monday. Details will be publicised widely and get a mention in next week’s programme. Watch this space . . .

Talking of cup rugby. Today sees a past players reunion at Laund Hill which we hope will include players from many eras, ready to share a libation and a story or two with old team mates.

This year, it is 25 years (2nd May 1998) since our victory at Twickenham in the Tetley Bitter Shield over West Leeds. Halcyon days as we went all season without a defeat. Hopefully that team will show up in numbers and add to a lively atmosphere in the club both before and after today’s match.

Let’s keep fingers crossed for a dry and sunny afternoon as our first season as Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC heads towards a close, the start of a new era for our club. Regular patrons will know it’s seldom warm out on the field at Laund Hill Stadium but that there is always a warm rugby welcome in the bar for players, spectators, match officials, past players and anyone else who wants to enjoy a drink  and discuss the sport of rugby union.

An especially warm welcome today to our visitors from Lodge Lane; Dinnington RFC.

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast flowing rugby. Dinnington currently sit eleventh in our division after winning four and losing sixteen of their fixtures so far and having earned four bonus points. HLH lie tenth having won five, drawn one and lost fourteen of our fixtures with ten added bonus points.

Back in October, HLH ran out winners at Dinnington by 33 points to 18 in what was a tough encounter as they inevitably are at Lodge Lane and I’m sure our visitors will want to end their season with a couple of wins. We must perform to our full capability today and hope to build on the positive momentum we began with a tremendous fight back to earn a draw away at Keighley last time out.

Good luck to both teams and to Dinnington for their last match of the league season next week and in the forthcoming cup competitions. I’m sure everyone looks forward to a keenly contested tussle today at Laund Hill played within the laws and spirit of the game we all love. We were made very welcome at Lodge Lane earlier this season and will look to be good hosts to our visitors, perhaps not being so generous to them on the field.

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field
