11/02/23 – Wetherby

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill as we work our way through the return fixtures now that we have passed the half way point in Yorkshire 1. Our first season as Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC, the start of a new era for our club.

An especially warm welcome today to our visitors from Grange Park; Wetherby RUFC.

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast flowing rugby. Wetherby currently sit fourth in our division after winning ten, losing five and drawing one of their fixtures so far having earned ten bonus points. HLH lie tenth having won four and lost twelve of our fixtures and have the same number of bonus points. Wetherby bring a second XV with them today and we look forward to giving them a contest on our top field. Sadly, clubs sending two teams happens all too infrequently these days so it especially good to witness this today and we all look forward to a good atmosphere afterwards in the bar. The players, spectators and officals will be joined by those attending today’s pre-match lunch where we welcome our league secretary, Ian Scott Brown and his wife Irene. Hopefully Dawn Rathmell, rugby development chair for Yorkshire will also join us at some point today following a cross Pennine trip.

Meanwhile, the rebuild at Laund Hill continues. I’m sure that retaining our place in this division has contributed towards the rebuild that has begun and where there is a more positive atmosphere week by week. HLH will be looking to reverse the scores from earlier in the season when Wetherby ran out  winners by 35 points to 13. Let’s hope we can give them a few things to think about this afternoon and put some more points between us and Dinnington who currently lie 11th in our division, eleven points below us. Dinnington have a tough fixture ahead of them after the long trip to Keighley, currently in second place to Goole.

Good luck to both teams and to Wetherby for the rest of their season. I’m sure everyone looks forward to a keenly contested tussle today at Laund Hill played within the laws and spirit of the game we all love. We were made very welcome at Grange Park earlier this season and will look to be good hosts to our visitors, perhaps not being so generous to them on the field.

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field
