Tony Johnson RIP

Tony played Professional Rugby League for Huddersfield at Fartown between 1973 until his retirement in 1985 when he started playing ‘social rugby’ at the YM. An excellent hard running second row forward the highlight of his League career was selection for England Under 23s. He reinvented himself into a ball handling centre for his Union career and was always a ‘handful’ for opponents to deal with.

Tony was a truly excellent rugby player and epitomised what both codes of rugby should be about. Playing at either professional or amateur levels he was always fair, he gave his all on the field and was a great team mate to play alongside. After the game he would always socialise with his opponents (he’d socialise with anyone) and was a fantastic Ambassador for the YM Club. Lots of older YMers will have very fond memories of playing alongside Tony and his brother Baz up on the ‘top field’ at Laund Hill.

When he gave up his stellar playing career, ‘peaking’ in the mid 90’s with our ‘Invincible’ Vets, he didn’t just pack in and sever his involvement in the game, he thrived by contributing to the Huddersfield Rugby League Past Players Association playing an integral part in the success of the organisation. He also maintained his links at the YM and could always be relied upon to support the Club at functions and when and wherever they were playing.

All who knew Tony will agree that he was just a great guy, always happy, fun to be with and positive about everything and everyone. He will be sadly missed.

Tony’s funeral will be held on Friday 3rd February 2023  1pm  at St Thomas Church, Thurstonland, HD4 6XD and will be followed by private cremation.

There is limited space inside the Church itself, however, all friends are welcome to pay their respects.

A celebration of Tony’s life will follow at the John Smiths Stadium, Revell Ward Suite from 3pm.

Donations if desired, to the Amyloidosis Research Fund 24 which can be found at  justgiving.com Ayloidosis Research UK in memory of Tony Johnson
