29/10/22 – Goole

29th Oct 2022, Match Day Programme

From the Chairman

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Laund Hill at the start of a new era for our club. An especially warm welcome today to our visitors from Westfield Banks, Goole RUFC.

Their officials, players and spectators are very welcome to join us for what we hope will be a keenly contested game of fast flowing rugby. Goole finished seventh in the league last season when we were fortunate not to be relegated. I’m sure that retaining our place in this division has contributed towards the rebuild that has begun at Laund Hill where there is a more positive atmosphere week by week.

In season 2021/2022, we won 12 – 31 at Goole in September and lost narrowly at home by 7 – 10 in January. Goole are currently top of Yorkshire 1 having lost only one game so far this season. Their first match away at Old Rishworthians and are sure to provide us with a stern test this afternoon. HLH currently lie 4th in the division and come to today’s match fresh from a hard earned victory at Dinnington last weekend. Today’s game will provide a further measure for us to gauge our progress in the senior men’s game.

Good luck to both teams and to Goole for the rest of their season. I’m sure everyone looks forward to a keenly contested tussle today at Laund Hill played within the laws and spirit of the game we all love.

Also welcome today is/are the match official(s), without whom, we wouldn’t be playing at all.

Everyone is asked to give them their full support and to have a chat with them in the bar after the match if they have something to discuss with them. The match officials are also here to enjoy their rugby and often travel many miles to ensure that we have a game each week. I’m sure they welcome your congratulations and will happily discuss any salient points over a beer or two, especially if you are paying!

Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC is a community club and is striving to provide an opportunity for everyone in the community to enjoy their rugby in whatever capacity they can manage whether it be playing, volunteering, taking on a role of responsibility, bringing along their children or simply turning up to support our players.

Your club is always desperately short of volunteers so if you can spare an hour or two each week, why not get in touch with the club volunteer co-ordinator, Sean Barrett. He can be contacted by mailing seanbarrett26@outlook.com and give something back to the club which may well have provided you with years of enjoyment on or off the field.

Our thanks today go to the club president, Dave Mosley who has kindly sponsored the game and is hosting the pre-match lunch in the function room where a number of new Vice Presidents will be inducted. These are volunteers who have made long term commitments to our club and have deserved recognition for making their time and skills available.

From the Presdient

On behalf of Huddersfield LH RUFC committee, I warmly welcome you all to Laund Hill this afternoon. I extend a personal and sincere welcome to all our members as well as our visiting teams and their officials. I hope that everyone enjoys their visit to The Hill to watch a game of rugby and that you can make time to join us for a drink in the bar after the final whistle.

It feels a long time since the first lock down in March 2020 and the changes the pandemic brought to people’s lives cannot be underestimated. The return to rugby last season was a challenge. This, coupled with the administration process, was especially tough for our club. Outside the committee credit must be given to the coaches, captains and their players who remained loyal and saw a challenging season out. The First XV fielded no less than 54 different players during the season and numbers were a challenge for the Roses, the 2nd XV and Nomads.

The above stated, the U15s had an excellent season. The highlight being a victory over our friends from Lockwood Park in the Yorkshire Shield Final. In addition, following a ten-year absence the return of the President’s Cup match in April was a triumph and rekindled people’s connection to our great club.

The atmosphere amongst the senior players has changed this season and there is a new confidence and buzz growing across the First Team which I hope cascades across to all senior teams and filters down to the growing mini’s section. Numbers at training are good and there is a self-belief emerging that we can not only compete but win games also.

We are hugely grateful to our sponsors and publicly thank them for their support. The club is also fortunate to have supportive members who volunteer their time to keep the club going. Thank you. We hope that you can show your support by buying a drink (or two) and some freshly prepared food after the game. Not forgetting the obligatory raffle ticket.

If we can keep the preseason momentum up I am confident that this is going to be a great rugby season. We must put the trials and tribulations of the last two years behind us and look forward with self-belief. The unity of the teams will be bonded further with the support they are given on and off the field. It is important that the positive atmosphere is mirrored by supporters from the side-lines and in the club house after each game.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing you around the pitches and in the bar – here is to a great 2022/3 season.

Up the Hill!

David J. Mosley
